41 AEC Paderborn & Bielefeld Army e-Learning Centres (e-LCs)

41 AEC has two e-LCs, one in Normandy Barracks, Sennelager and one in Catterick Barracks, Bielefeld, both offer the ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) qualification through an accredited online learning programme.

The ECDL is the most recognised civilian computer admin qualification in the world. An online course that can be started at any time to suit you, and the e-LC staff can assist in scheduling your learning and tests around your own timescale*.

Learning can be done at home, work or in the e-LC. The course is offered at a special Army contracted cost price of £124.05

ECDL courses are open to Military personnel, contractors and adult dependants. SLCs may be used by military personnel and staff are happy to advise on how to use, or complete your SLC paperwork.

Both e-LCs are accredited test centres for the British Computer Society (BCS) for the ECDL, and hold accreditation for City & Guilds military Functional Skills programmes and tests.

41 AEC e-Learning - ECDL Level 1 Essentials & Level 2 Extra, BCS Qualifications in IT Skills

By achieving an ECDL qualification you will acquire IT skills and qualifications to show that you can do a job more effectively and productively. On-line learning can be completed in your own time at home, work or within the e-LC.

Level 1 ECDL Essentials is 3 modules of online learning and a test for each module to achieve the qualification. These modules relate to computer basic, security and the internet, including email (Outlook).

Level 2 ECDL Extra is 4 modules of online learning which in clued Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and a test for each module.

The programme, including tests and certification is offered by Army Education at a special price of £124.05 and is available to all military personnel, UKBCs, adult dependants and contractors

Level 1 = £52.05; Level 2 = £72.00

Both Levels = £124.05*

Life In The UK Test

The e-LC in Normandy Barracks recently became are an approved Life in the UK test centre for the Home Office for those wishing to take their British citizenship test.

Who is the test for? Not a British citizen? Moving to live in the UK? Want to become a British citizen? Over 18?

If you want to become a British citizen or apply for settlement in the UK as the spouse of a British citizen you should apply to take the test. The Life in the UK test is part of the Home Office British citizen naturalisation application process. For more details please visit - https://www.gov.uk/becoming-a-british-citizen

What is the test?

The test was introduced in 2005 for citizenship applications. It is a computer based online test. You have 45 minutes to answer 24 questions about British traditions and customs.

Can I prepare for the test?

The Home Office has produced an official handbook - Life in the United Kingdom: a guide for new residents published Jan 2014 3rd Edition. ISBN 978-0113413409. This book is available on loan from all local Army Libraries, or to purchase from any good UK book or online stores.

You will be tested on information from the official handbook for the Life in the UK Test – the Home Office states that you should study this book to prepare for the test.

Where and when can I take the test?

41 AEC e-Learning Centre on Normandy Barracks, Sennelager, Paderborn is the only BFPO approved test centre for Life in the UK tests for Germany, Shape and other localised BFPO addresses. When applying online for a test select the BFPO options to find your nearest test centre. Test dates are found during registration on the government website https://www.gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test and are subject to demand.

How do I apply?

Registrations should be completed online at least three calendar days ahead of the test, using the web-site https://www.gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test The test fee is currently £50 (non-refundable) which you must pay online when you register. The details you provide in your application must match your specified ID exactly (if not you will be rejected on arrival at the test centre). You must bring the specified ID and a valid BFG photo ID (Military/Dependant ID, Consular/Embassy ID/Diplomatic ID – all must be in date and contain your name and photo.) when you come to the test centre to sit your test.

Once booked you will be sent a booking confirmation email informing you of your test date and time and the form of ID you used to register, please bring this email with your ID with you on your test date. It is advisable to arrive at the test centre 20 minutes before your test time. Tests are run at local time; please check with the centre if you are unsure of what time to attend on your test day. Candidates arriving late will be rejected.

Passing the test

Successfully passing the test does not automatically guarantee British citizenship. Applicants will still need to follow normal eligibility and application processes for British citizenship and there is no guarantee that applications will be successful. The AEC staff cannot assist in any aspect of the application or any appeals process.
