On 17th May, the Bielefeld Swimming Club held its final event: an awards ceremony and rather noisy closing party. Entertainment, games and music kept the children busy both before and after the awards were presented.

Commander BFG very kindly offered to present the certificates of achievement to all club members which were accompanied by a very special swim club ‘prism’ which will hopefully adorn the childrens’ bedrooms and remind them of their time at the club.

Over 38 children have remained at the club to the end of the season and have been awarded their certificates regulated by ‘Swim England’, the professional body of swim teaching.

It was not only the children who have been awarded certificates however; the instructors and other volunteers were also treated to a special prism for their help with seeing the club through a successful 5 years in Bielefeld. Chief instructor, Jane Myers, was presented with a certificate of appreciation for all her work in volunteering with the club, not only in Bielefeld, but also JHQ for a number of years before its closure.

Colonel Andy Thorne, Deputy Chief of Staff and former Chair of the JHQ swim club, said, ‘Jane has been voluntarily teaching swimming in the community for over 10 years and has also been involved with the two swim clubs in other voluntary roles. She has continuously devoted herself to her instructing.’

Current club Chairman, WO1 Gareth Medlock said that the party was a fitting end to a vibrant club and wishes all of the young swimmers the very best of luck in their future swim ventures.
